Why Microchipping Helps
Transport adds risk points: pickup, loading, rest stops, hotel stops, delivery, and unfamiliar doors. A microchip gives shelters and vets a permanent ID number to help reunite a lost pet with the owner.
AAHA recommends permanent identification for dogs and cats using traceable microchips, along with current registry information.
Registration Matters
A chip without current registration is a weak safety net. Check the chip number, registry, owner phone, email, alternate contact, vet contact, and destination contact before pickup.
AAHA's lookup tool can help identify which registry may have the chip information. It is a lookup tool, not where owners update the chip.
Microchip Vs GPS
A microchip is not GPS. It does not show where the pet is. It only works when someone scans the pet and contacts the registry.
If you want live location visibility, ask the operator about GPS tracking or update cadence separately.
| ID type | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Microchip | Permanent scanned ID | Live GPS tracking |
| Collar tag | Fast visible contact | Works if collar is lost |
| GPS tracker | Location signal | Official owner proof |
What To Update Before Pickup
Update your phone number, email, address, alternate contact, destination contact, and medical notes if the registry allows them. Make sure someone can answer during the trip.
If you moved recently, changed phone numbers, adopted the pet, or got the pet chipped at a clinic, do not assume the records are correct.
Safety note: Do not wait until transport day to check the chip. If the registry is wrong or missing, fix it before pickup.
Tags And Backup ID
Use a collar tag with current phone numbers for dogs and cats when safe. For carriers, add a label with pet name, owner name, phone, destination contact, and emergency vet.
Microchips are backup. Visible ID helps faster.
